    Of all the modern poetry we had to read, I must say that, like many others in the class, I found the poems of Giuseppe Ungaretti the most enjoyable of all because I found his poems to be the simplest and easiest to understand. A common theme that seems to persist in many of Ungaretti's poems is that he seems to write a lot about the death and pain that constantly surround him in his environment, perhaps indicating that he was a soldier who wrote these poems at during a war. wartime. Evidence of this is found in the poem Vigil, in which Ungaretti describes spending "an entire night crouching next to one of 'their slaughtered men,' presumably a comrade who was brutally massacred in battle ( Ungaretti, p. ).' Admittedly, initially, when I first read the poem, I was quite confused as to why Ungaretti would devote an entire poem to describing a seemingly meaningless star. However, after reading the poem a second time, I immediately began to realize that this was the case. The poem, like many of Ungarett's other poems, must have had a deep inner meaning. As such, it seems that the poem was most likely about a person that Ungaretti actually loved and that the "star" was just a form of "poetry". the symbolism of his love, which seems to be the main theme of this poem.
