A major disease is called obesity, which is an excessive amount of body fat in a person. There is a scale called body mass index [BMI] that can measure body fat and see if the person is classified as obese (Warkentin 3). The scale uses a person's height and weight to generate an estimate of the amount of body fat to calculate BMI. Obesity is a disease that can alter the structure of the heart and how it functions. According to Warkentin, “The more you weigh, the more blood circulates in your body. The heart has to work harder to pump the extra blood” (3). Over time, this can overload the heart and cause heart failure. The risk of suffering from many heart diseases and failures can be significantly reduced by maintaining a healthy weight.
