Essay / The Apollo Program - 1834
Project Apollo (Apollo Program)It was May 25, 1961, Cold War tensions were rising and on that day, President John F. Kennedy promised Americans that an American would walk on the moon by the end of the decade. This promise led to the creation of the Apollo program, whose sole mission was to land an American on the Moon. Immediately after JFK's speech at Rice Stadium, he gained immense support from the American people and launched the race to the moon against the Soviets. Project Apollo remains one of the most important programs in our recent history and still has a significant impact on society today because it sparked a technological revolution that contributed to modern technology, paving the way for exploration modern spacecraft, and he helped lead America through a time of crisis. The idea of sending a man into space was conceived in early 1961 by JFK. On April 12, 1961, before JFK announced Project Apollo, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to go into space and orbit the Earth; this event triggered the space race between the Soviets and the Americans.{4} The first American step in the space program was the creation of Project Mercury which aimed to send an American into orbit; this was accomplished on February 20, 1962. With an American in orbit, the next goal was to put a man on the Moon, but unfortunately the technology was nowhere near sophisticated enough to accomplish such a task. {6} As a result, Project Gemini was created with the goal of developing space travel techniques, developing a precise method of re-entry, and creating the technology needed to travel to and from the Moon. All of these new programs were undertaken by NASA, or by the National...... middle of paper ...... and many of the issues were the protests against the Vietnam War, the race wars in America, and the clashes resulting from civil rights. movement.{3} Project Apollo also helped set the stage for future space exploration and opened the minds of Americans to the possibilities of space exploration. Today, in the media, films are still being made about the Apollo projects, just like the film Apollo 13. More importantly, the Apollo project instilled confidence in the Americans against the Soviets, because before the race to the Moon, the Soviets almost always beat the Americans. with technological advances. However, it showed that the Americans had a chance against them.{7}To this day, Project Apollo holds one of the greatest legacies to date. This marked the beginning of an era of space exploration. Project Apollo created a technological revolution and helped give Americans hope in a time of crisis.
