Objectives: Triphala is the combination of three medicinal plants, widely used in Ayurveda since Antiquity. Triphala mouthwash is used in the treatment of periodontal disease due to its antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. The aim of this study is to compare the effectiveness of Triphala mouthwash with 0.2% chlorhexidine in hospitalized patients with periodontal disease. Material and method: In this randomized, multicenter, double-blind clinical trial, 120 patients were divided equally into three groups. Patients in group A were advised to rinse their mouth with 10 ml of distilled water, group B with 0.2% chlorhexidine and group C with triphala mouthwash for one minute twice a day. day for two weeks. Plaque index (PI) and gingival index (GI) were recorded on the first and fifteenth days. Results: There was no significant difference when the effectiveness of triphala was compared with that of chlorhexidine 0.2% in hospitalized patients with periodontal disease. However, a statistically significant difference was observed in PI and GI when group B and group C were compared with group A as well as within groups B and C, after 15 days (p < 0, 05). Conclusion: Triphala mouthwash (herbal) is an effective means. antiplaque agent such as chlorhexidine 0.2%.
