  • Essay / The Effects of Drug Addiction - 1939

Drug addiction affects hundreds of millions of people around the world. It can be a debilitating and destructive force in people's lives and cause them to have negative effects not only on themselves but also on those around them. There are many different reasons for the prevalence of drug addiction and the effects these substances have on people. Different drugs affect individuals in different ways, but drug addiction can often be linked directly or indirectly to criminal activity. These reasons include, but are not limited to, the pharmacological, psychological, and social variables involved in drug addiction and are behind the association between drugs and crime. It is estimated that in 2010, there were between 153 million and 300 million people aged 15 to 15. 64 have used an illicit substance at least once (“World Drug Report 2012”, 2012). Substances considered illicit drugs are those that are illegal, such as marijuana, amphetamines, cocaine, and opiates. Although the minimum and maximum of the estimate are quite scattered, it should be kept in mind that some of these estimates come from remote countries and regions where there is either very unreliable or non-existent statistical data. Nevertheless, this figure is very alarming because it means that it is between 3.4 percent and 6.6 percent of the population. The global population aged 15 to 64 has used illicit drugs. Approximately 12% of these users are dependent on drugs or suffer from some sort of drug-related disorder (“World Drug Report 2012,” 2012). A separate study in the United States by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration estimated that approximately 22.6 million Americans over the age of 12 are illicit drug users (Bartol & Bartol, 478).
