  • Essay / College Admissions Essay: Why Nothing Is Fascinating

I find the world a fascinating place and want to better understand many of its different facets. However, one thing I continually think about is “nothing.” The idea of “nothing”, of nothing, completely fascinates me. I actually chose the topic for my senior project. In the sense of counting, zero represents nothing. If there could be two, or five, or any number, but there aren't, there are zero. However, on a complete number line, zero is something. Zero has a point on the line, like all other numbers. Last month I had a discussion with my math teacher about the true mathematical representation of "nothing", the empty set, a numerical set without numbers, equations, variables, or anything in it. From a strictly numerical perspective, I can fully grasp the concept. However, from a general perspective, I just can't understand the idea of "nothing". I'm always baffled by something I read in a book when I was a kid (I can't remember which one). In the book, nothingness was presented as the foundation of our universe. The author wondered what else might remain beyond the smallest of the small. It seems nothing else can.
