Essay / I Am Legend - 717
Director Francis Lawrence's 2007 film adaptation of author Richard Matheson's I Am Legend is the perfect selection for the FYS 175 class film. Award-winning Will Smith Oscar, plays the role of the legendary Robert Neville. The character of Robert Neville is a somewhat messianic figure in the apocalyptic narrative. Samantha, Robert's dog, is the faithful and ideal companion. Towards the end of the film, Anna and Ethan Montez appear and help advance the legend of Robert. The film depicts a dystopian period of the world, while providing a sense of hope. It is this feeling of hope conveyed by I Am Legend that allows the film to fit this course perfectly. The FYS 175 class film is a film that depicts an apocalyptic and eschatological meaning. It's important that the Oscar-winning end-of-times film paints a picture of hope toward the end, as I Am Legend does. Hope is a major theme throughout the eschatological readings of the courses. Each reading tells the story of a group of people living in a bleak state, while hoping to be delivered to utopia. The plot of I Am Legend is identical to this common theme of blossoming hope. The main character, Robert Neville, possesses the same hope and determination as the people of the cargo cults and the children of Fatima. The film lacks the theme of millenarianism while heavily emphasizing the apocalyptic and eschatological significance. I Am Legend presents an interesting theory about the end of the world that was not directly discussed in FYS 175. I Am Legend presents the idea of the end of the world due to medical advancements. Although this theory was not addressed directly in the course, the theory of the apocalypse occurring due to global human progress was widespread...... middle of article...... d' a man living a solitary lifestyle and suggests to the viewer what it would be like to be the only man alive. The special effects used in the film create the image of somewhat demonic apocalyptic characters. The director chose to use computer-generated imagery to make the zombies appear real. The computer-generated images allowed the zombies to constantly hyperventilate and appear heavily infected with the virus. I Am Legend is certainly qualified to be the Oscar-winning End Times film, due to its apocalyptic, eschatological and hopeful meaning. Robert sacrifices his life to heal the human race, which symbolizes the death of Jesus Christ. Although Robert's life is over, his legend allows a new, hopefully better, society to be born. It's this utopian ending that proves I Am Legend should be the class FYS movie 175..
