  • Essay / Aliens Ate My Homework by Bruce Coville - 652

In Aliens Ate My Homework by Bruce Coville, Rod Allbright, the main character, shows many character traits. These attributes strongly build an interesting story. Rod is a typical kid, often bullied. His science project was due soon and he had to babysit his twin siblings. Then, a spaceship crashed into his room, giving him even more problems to overcome. Throughout the book, Rod demonstrated helpfulness, honesty, courage, responsibility, curiosity, and caution. First of all, Rod was very helpful and cooperative when following the aliens' instructions to complete their mission. He did this by transporting the spaceship to a nearby field so it could expand, bringing the aliens to school, skipping school so he could bring the aliens to BKR's house (BKR was the opponent ), and many others. Dwight Eisenhower once said, “While force can protect in an emergency, only…cooperation can ultimately lead…to the dawn of eternal peace.” » By cooperating and being helpful, Rod became the aliens' ally, which was a rather wise thing to do, considering the aliens have very powerful weapons. Rod was also very honest. When he was three, he was denied a cookie from the jar. He decided to sneak inside. After opening the cookie jar, he heard his mother coming, so to get rid of the evidence, he stuffed the entire cookie into his mouth. He denied having a cookie in his mouth, which earned him a punishment that required him to stand on a chair facing the wall. From then on, he always told the truth. In fact, he won't even tell white lies. This helps build the plot of the story, where he always gives an honest answer to all questions. For example, when his teacher asked him about his math homework, he responded, "The aliens ate my homework!... in the middle of a sheet... the ship is bossy and irritable." He was also careful to follow all instructions. The crew members' precise instructions were crucial to successfully capturing BKR the criminal. One small mistake, and everyone's life would be over, Rod was capable of completing his tasks even if he wasn't. Perfect. He was able to bring great prosperity to the aliens and their mission. Rod truly demonstrated mindfulness, curiosity, reliability, courage, truthfulness and support. These traits are important for a respectable character as Rod Charles Spurgeon said it best. A good character is the best...Those who loved you and were helped by you will remember you..." Bruce Coville created Rod as a protagonist to show readers how being a good character is part of integral to personal success, strong relationships, and saving the world!
