The Metamorphosis of Dimmesdale in Scarlet LetterIn The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, many characters transform; one of them is the Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale. Dimmesdale committed a great sin of Puritan society, he slept with another man's wife and Hester Prynne became pregnant. Hester was punished for her sin but Arthur Dimmesdale didn't admit it, so he lives with this guilt and it's much worse for him because he is a Puritan minister. Dimmesdale inflicts punishment on himself because of his adulterated sin. Dimmesdale transforms throughout the novel always in the same place "The scaffolding". The town is all set to witness Hester Prynne's punishment, some women suggest other punishments, and the women tell us about Hester and Dimmesdale. People say, said another, that the Reverend Master Dimmesdale, his pious pastor, takes it very much to heart that such a scandal has struck his congregation. ยป (Page 49) Reverend Dimmesdale is considered a pious man. the man who does not commit sin and in his mind at this point he feels good and has no guilt at this point in the novel is considered pious and throughout the novel even at the end after the last . scaffolding scene. Therefore, Dimmesdale tries to convince Hester to reveal the man who sinned with her, so that the man can be relieved of his guilt, which is quite ironic because he is the one who sinned with her. What can your silence do for him, except that it tempts him, even compels him, so to speak, to add hypocrisy to sin? Heaven has granted you open ignominy, so that you may thus openly triumph over evil within you and over sorrow without. Be careful how you refuse to him who, by chance, does not have the courage to take it himself, the bitter but healthy cup which is now presented to your lips. " (Page 65) This is the first scaffold scene. Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale shows no signs of guilt at this point, he is still pretty much the same and has not started to inflict punishment on himself or , at least it seems that Dimmesdale in the first scene at the scaffold seems pretty normal and hasn't started to transform but the next time we see him at the scaffold he is taken at his worst..
