Essay / The Laramie Project - 1892
The Laramie Project, written by Moisés Kaufman, is a compilation of Tectonic Theater Project interviews, current affairs publications, and journal entries. After the brutal murder of Mathew Sheppard in 1998, Kaufman and his theater troupe traveled six times to Laramie, Wyoming, where the murder took place, to interview people about what happened and what happened. they thought about crime in their community. They interviewed about two hundred people, about sixty of whom were in the room. The play presents a small town in America in a tragic historical period. The production of The Laramie Project was simple. The staging was minimal and the cast consisted of eight people representing over sixty people. Through a mosaic of interviews, The Laramie Project conveys themes of identity, representation, and change. The main character of The Laramie Project is the town of Laramie, Wyoming. The subject is how the murder of Mathew Shepard impacted this small American town. "We could be on any main street in America... As we passed the University Inn, on the sign where amenities such as a heated swimming pool or cable television are usually touted, it was writes: HATE IS NOT A VALUE OF LARAMIE" (Jacobus 1632). The identities of many ordinary people have been affected by a single unimaginable event. The emphasis is on how the compilation of individual attitudes shapes the identity of a community and how identities are altered in the wake of tragedy. “As with any work assembled from found materials, the creative choices about what to include, what to omit, and how to juxtapose the pieces were guided by the attitudes of the creators and the goal of the project to understand why the crime occurred and how it influenced community attitudes. »(Evans).
