  • Essay / Horrible Societies: Lord of the Flies and I Only Came...

A considerable number of authors use their own writing style to prove a point, share an opinion, and establish a theme. Lord of the Flies and I Only Came to Use the Phone are no different. They use certain symbols such as the conch, the beast, Herculina and the sanitarium to show the cruelty that occurs within these societies. The authors show exactly how these societies would be considered inhumane and cruel, as a result of the effects of these horrible societies. In Lord of the Flies and I Only Came to Use the Phone, Golding and Marquez use explicit symbolism to show how cruel and inhumane these societies are to their inhabitants, following the horrific effects these societies have on people. For Using the Telephone, writer Marquez uses his creative use of symbolism and manipulates it to show how cruel and inhumane societies are. The sanitarium was used to show the inhumane, cruel and detached place where Maria and the other patients would be forced to stay. For example: “The bus entered the cobbled courtyard of a huge, dark building that looked like an old convent in the middle of a forest of colossal trees. » (Marquez, 72) The author used the word dark to describe the building, making the reader understand that things will not go well while Maria stays at the sanitarium, that she and the rest of the patients will not be happy and cared for. with all the respect and attention they deserve. The sanatorium is Maria's new society, she has been taken away from what she once knew and is transported to a cruel, dangerous and dangerous place that will begin to have an effect on her. Additionally, later in the story, Marquez shows the reader how much Maria hates this new society. “Maria realized... middle of paper ......was leading the pig, he was becoming bloodthirsty, almost obsessed. All he wanted to do was kill and that's not who he was at the start of the story. Jack had started to lose his mind. “Madness returned to his eyes” (Golding 57) Once again, Jack shows his obsession with killing, that’s all he wants. Golding wanted his animalistic qualities to be portrayed to show how living in cruel, evil, and downright disturbing communities can affect you over time. In conclusion, it is evident that Golding and Marquez use different writing techniques such as symbolism and foreshadowing to expose the barbaric character. and the perverse effects that a society has on its inhabitants and how it changes people all together.
