  • Essay / Efforts for Florida's Manatees and Sea Turtles - 1410

In the state of Florida, there are dozens of individualized non-profit organizations working to help local wildlife. Local land and marine wildlife include birds, geckos, frogs, snakes, panthers, manatees, sea turtles, fish, sharks, corals, lizards and more. The state of Florida is located at the southeastern tip of the United States, providing a unique opportunity for the conservation of saltwater animals. Although animal conservation efforts are happening all over the world, this essay will focus on two animal species that humans are specifically trying to save in the state of Florida. The two main animal species targeted are manatees and sea turtles. Manatees, commonly known as sea cows, are large aquatic mammals found in warm coastal areas, rivers and hot springs of the Amazon basin, West Africa, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea and southeastern United States. Manatees can be found in salt water, fresh water and brackish water. They spend most of their time eating aquatic plants, resting, migrating, and feeding their young. The manatee species has evolved over the past 45 million years. The adult manatee has evolved to reach an average length of about 10 feet and weighs between 800 and 1,200 pounds (Site This). Being around for 45 million years is not enough for the Florida manatee to continue to survive. The Florida manatee is in danger of extinction. Obstacles to the survey prevented obtaining an accurate population count; Until late 2009, the best estimate was between 1,000 and 3,500 manatees left in the wild. This figure was considered fairly accurate until January 2010, when a 2-week cold snap in Florida caused the Florida Wildlife Service to preliminary...... middle of article...... we. CONCLUSIONEfforts by different conservation organizations and the State of Florida have a mixed impact on the survival of manatees and sea turtles. Manatee population declines have diminished, but due to low reproduction rates, more must be done to avoid extinction. Perspectives on sea turtles are more species specific. Some turtle species are seeing their populations stabilize, while others are not. The State of Florida has a wide variety of custom license tags that support ongoing conservation efforts in the state. Proceeds will be donated to local marine life in Florida. With financial resources, state and local cooperation, and through constant research and observation, we can learn more about these two gentle animals. Thanks to the human conscience of those who live in Florida, these two animals will survive
