Essay / Noblewoman in a Male-Centered Society - 1367
“The Days of a Russian Noblewoman” is a translated memoir originally written by a Russian noblewoman named Anna Labzina. Anna's memoir gives a unique perspective on the private lives and gender roles of noble families in Russia. Anna sees the male and female genders as similar in nature, but not in terms of morality and religiosity. She views men as fundamentally different in terms of morality and religiosity because of their ability to be freely dogmatic, outspoken, and libertine. Anna implies throughout her memoir that women in this society have the ability to shape and control their lives through modest, submissive, and virtuous behavior in times of torment. Through her marriage, Labzina discovers that her society is heavily male-centered. Anna transcribes her memories in a way that moves from being able to love freely to being forced to love Alexander Karmyshev out of obligation; it was a marriage arranged by his mother. Anna considers the role of a noble woman to be completely submissive towards her husband, even under unbearable conditions. Lessons learned from her mother helped shape and control her life. Labzina's mother instilled in her the lessons of submission and survival before leaving. Her mother's motivation for teaching her these things was for the elites to intercede on her behalf out of respect for her. Her mother's teachings were: "Respect your husband as your master, obey him and love him with all your heart, even if he acts badly towards you... Pay no attention to the flirtations of men... Conduct yourself so that no man is. bold enough to say something indecent… Do not hide anything from his [mother-in-law] about what is in your heart, you will be spared many misfortunes” (p.16, p.23). During this period.. .... middle of paper...... ook it is remarkable that a woman would decide to reprimand Alexander for his actions, while the men were able to do so with great alacrity. The memoir gives a unique perspective of the noble woman in this period of Russia. Company. In a male-centered society, it was difficult for women to shape and control their lives, but it was possible through respect. Society respected women who had a virtuous attitude. Especially those who lived with an immoral spouse and were nonetheless able to demonstrate virtuous characteristics. Anna is able to gain respect from people with higher authority than her husband and receiving special treatment for various requests. Through her marriage, she recognizes that her husband has rights that she does not have to shape and control her private and especially public life. This society makes women completely dependent on men.
