  • Essay / Research Project on Algae as Renewable Energy - 1573

The goal of this project was to determine if algae would produce more energy than sunflower oil and canola oil. The hypothesis was that the algae would produce more energy. The type of algae used for the experiment was chlorella. The project's experiment involved growing algae in water placed under a carbon dioxide tank. The algae required a light cycle of 12 hours per day to grow effectively. Once grown, the algae was placed in a bomb calorimeter to measure the amount of thermal energy it produced. Since there wasn't much seaweed, it was mixed with sunflower oil. Subsequently, sunflower oil and canola oil were also tested in the bomb calorimeter to measure the amount of thermal energy they generate. Algae produced -56.2670 kJ/g, compared to sunflower oil producing -36.5578 kJ/g and canola oil producing -3.4893 kJ/g in the bomb calorimeter. This result confirms that algae produces more than sunflower oil and canola oil. Algae as Renewable Energy Research Project Background: Over the past decades, large collections of microalgae have been created by researchers from different countries. An example is the collection of freshwater microalgae at the University of Coimbra (Portugal), considered one of the largest in the world, with more than 4,000 strains and 1,000 species. This collection demonstrates the wide variety of different microalgae available to be selected for use in a wide diversity of applications, such as value-added products for pharmaceutical purposes, food crops for human consumption and as a source of energy (microalgae for biodiesel production and other applications). , 2009).Algae-based biofuels are attracting considerable interest worldwide. Microalgae are unicellular, photos... middle of paper ... experiment would be applied to convert algae into biofuels in the future. These biofuels could be used in transport vehicles. Conclusion: The hypothesis was that algae would produce more energy than canola oil and sunflower oil. The results found through this experiment support this hypothesis. This shows how algae could be a great alternative as a renewable energy source. Algae is the best choice over other oils because it creates the most energy through experimentation and the process of growing algae does not harm the environment around it. People should use algae as renewable energy because it has impressive productivity, non-competitive with agriculture, flexible on water quality, flexible on water quality, mitigating carbon dioxide and a wide portfolio of products. Algae therefore constitutes the best source of renewable energy.
