  • Essay / Analysis of Katherine Koolcaba's Comfort Theory

    Physical pain is most easily treated by the administration of medication or a non-pharmaceutical intervention such as repositioning or the application of heat or cold. Nursing care in a general medical unit is about patient- and family-centered care, which is consistent with Kolcaba's comfort theory. A large portion of patients seen in this type of unit have multiple comorbidities and difficult social situations that require an assessment of their medical history, support system, and current living situation. All of this is taken into account in multidisciplinary rounds where the data collected is communicated to all disciplines and a care plan developed for each patient. The unit I currently lead brings together our multidisciplinary unit on a daily basis. Needs are identified and assigned to team members who include social work, care management, and therapies in addition to nurses and providers. Since the team meets daily, it is possible to evaluate the effectiveness of prescribed interventions. Nursing care management is an integral part of this work in assessing, planning and coordinating care in the hospital and as the patient returns to their home and community.
