  • Essay / How do psychologists interpret the role of genes in...

There has been much debate in the field of psychology about whether we behave the way we do because of nature or because 'education. This controversy has several facets. Most of the time, we can conclude that they collaborate. But how can behavioral psychologists and geneticists actually find evidence that genes play a role in our behavior? The psychologist always tries to find out what leads a person to a certain behavior. From nature's perspective, it is described that behavior is usually inherited and in our genes it just sometimes needs a trigger from the environment. To understand certain types of behavior and help find the causes of certain behavior patterns, genetic studies are important. The more we understand how behavior develops, the more likely it will prevent tantrums and mental problems and the easier it will be to predict certain types of behavior. In general, it is believed that most personality traits are inherited and therefore the genes are passed down from parents and mainly triggered by environmental factors. First of all, you need to understand what genes are. Genes are “the unit of hereditary transmission encoded in DNA [...] transmitted from a parent to their offspring”. (cited in Colman, AM (2009), Dictionary of Psychology). Every organism has two genes for each trait, something inherited from each parent. An example of research suggesting that genetic inheritance contributes to behavior is that of inbred lines. So far this has only been tested in animal research. Inbred lines are important for genetic research because inbreeding minimizes genetic variation. The lineage will therefore be genetically similar. Pearl and Parker (1922) crossed five different strains of fruit flies to study...... middle of article ......ed, that it is important to evaluate the role of genes in the behavior. Otherwise, the picture would not be complete. For the moment, is it still impossible? Understand the exact balance of genetic and environmental influences. Nonetheless, research shows that inherited genes play a major role in behavior. Not everything can be labeled with numbers yet, but the evidence strongly suggests that genes influence behavior to some extent.
