People always seem to think that women's right to vote ended after the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. No one has ever thought about the consequences. People had been fighting for the right to vote for decades. Susan B. Anthony, feminist leader from 1837. She is considered the mother of women's suffrage and is still quoted today: "The day will come when men will recognize woman as their equal, not only at the corner fire, but in councils of the nation. Then, and only then, will there be the perfect companionship, the ideal union between the sexes which will result in the highest development of the race. Since that day, women have gained many positions in many areas of society previously dominated by men. The fight for women's rights dates back centuries, but feminism in the 1900s really gained popularity, was taken seriously, and women gained rights in politics, society, and within the home. This meeting was held to pave the way for the suffragettes and feminists of the time. In 1848, a group of three hundred men and women met to discuss women's right to vote. Among these women were the most iconic feminists of the era; Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, Amelia Bloomer, Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth. These iconic women – and, surprisingly, men too – all signed a statement of sentiments that married women should be able to have the right to own land, earn income and gain custody of their children upon completion of 'a divorce. It also spelled out the right to vote, but many considered this deeply held idea too profound and risked compromising their other achievements written in advance.
