It's no secret that the world is now riddled with problems that stretch from one end of the globe to the other. Among these problems lies a terrible truth: almost every year, nearly eight million cats and dogs are placed in shelters around the world. Of this large number, half will be euthanized; this equates to one animal being slaughtered every 8 seconds. Unadopted animals are kept in shelters until they find a home. Most of these shelters do not have enough space or resources to care for the animal. Only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats who enter animal shelters are reunited with their owners. The majority of pets come from acquaintances and family members. Twenty-six percent of dogs are purchased from breeders, 20 to 30 percent of cats and dogs are adopted from shelters and shelters, and 2 to 10 percent are purchased from pet stores. Additionally, only 56% of dogs and 71% of cats entering animal shelters are euthanized. All 10 percent of animals received by shelters were spayed or neutered, while 78 percent of dogs and 88 percent of cats were neither spayed nor neutered, as of 2009.
