Cosmetic companies continually advertise in the media for their benefit; However, these advertisements have a negative impact on viewers. Different types of media serve different purposes depending on their purpose, which influences the viewer's perception. For example, advertisements are designed to convince the public to buy products, while news articles, despite their biases, are written to inform people. This concludes that media in different forms can represent businesses both positively and negatively. This essay will compare the portrayal of cosmetics companies in Jane Irdale's 'Blushing Beauty' advert with the news article 'Five-year-old girls worried about their body image, MPs say' by Rebecca Smithers. To compare the two media forms, this essay will examine how perspectives, language, and images are used to position audiences. The advertisement builds a positive representation of cosmetic companies while the article claims that cosmetic advertisements are the cause of body dissatisfaction in society. Additionally, both media texts incorporate certain perspectives to serve their intended purpose. While the advertisement persuades the public to purchase cosmetic products, the report is written to clarify that negative body image is initiated by cosmetic advertisements. By transmitting an unrealistic ideal of beauty, the “Blushing Beauty” advertisement stereotypes young women. However, in most cases even men are affected. Additionally, the newspaper article contains opposition to cosmetics companies. Likewise, the advertisement symbolizes Jane Irdales' point of view. In conjunction with media tools, it is clear that over time the media has become increasingly provocative.
