  • Essay / Teen Driving: Texting While Driving - 749

For many teens, getting their license at the age of 16 is a highlight. However, over the years, it has become increasingly difficult to know whether 16-year-olds are mature enough to drive. There are many different opinions and statistics for both sides of the discussion. Due to the high number of accidents among teenagers, studies show that increasing the driving age will reduce accidents among teenagers. Statistics are one of the main contributors to the argument that the driving age should be increased. One in five 16-year-olds will have a reportable car accident during their first year of driving. In 2003, 937 drivers aged 16 were involved in fatal accidents; in these accidents, 411 drivers aged 16 were killed and 352 of their passengers were killed. In 2005, in the United States, an average of two people died every day in vehicles driven by drivers aged 16 and over. Drivers aged 16 are involved in fatal crashes at a rate nearly five times higher than drivers aged over 20. 40 percent of 16-year-old drivers involved in fatal single-vehicle crashes in 2003 had one or more passengers. This shows that teenagers cannot be trusted to drive with a passenger, as it puts them and others at risk. About 77 percent of 16-year-olds involved in a fatal crash made a driving error, compared to less than 60 percent of drivers over 20. These are some of the many statistics that show why teenagers are too young to be allowed to drive (Davis) (O'Donnell). Many restrictions and laws have been established to limit adolescents. In North Carolina, teens cannot drive after age 9. pm for the first six months after getting their license and in California, teens are not allowed to have passengers for the first six months after getting their (driving) license.
