Essay / Comparing Odysseus and Gilgamesh - 1018
Are two men and their cities really so different? We read two stories of so-called heroes and what they experience in their lives. In the following article I would like to tell you about Odysseus and Gilgamesh and how we can think of them as the same or different. Odysseus and Gilgamesh were two heroes from two different regions, but both were searching for the meaning of life and had an adventure story to tell. Odysseus and his city of Ithaca The Odyssey is a popular read because of the great adventures that Odysseus goes on. upon his return home. His return to the country took him 20 years. Throughout the story we read of many triumphs that Odysseus goes through on his way home. As we reflect on the story of Odysseus, we can see that the theme of returning home is very prevalent. Almost the entire story is based on his return home and the adventures he endures to get there. The Odyssey books are based on the stories of Odysseus. Odysseus in the readings is pretreated as a very intelligent man and capable of cheating his way out of whatever he gets himself and his men into. I feel like he was always prepared through his many adventures, no matter what happened he had a plan to make sure he got through it, maybe not his men but he was definitely going to get there. An example of this would be the Trojan horse. Another example in the reading would be when he is at Cyclops' cave, when he tells him that his name is "Nobody". (Brian Wilkie, 2001) (O'Lone, 2014)By reading the stories of Odysseus, we can see that there are many things that Odysseus cannot relate to anyone else. It's because he experienced things that no one else has and it's hard for people to believe him. Looking at his appearance, he too is alone and has no one to identify with. This makes things difficult for him, but at the same time people are drawn to him to listen to his stories. At first it was hard for me to see how Odysseus was a hero, other than the fact that he was at war, and all the challenges he overcame to return home.
