New York Central Park, as a successful precedent for an urban public park in a metropolis, supported the park proposal made by Sir James Alexander in 1840. Mount Royal was chosen for its natural beauty and the convenience of its location. Frederic Law Olmsted was named lead designer of Mount Royal Park. He saw the suffering caused by industrialization and used it as the basis for his plans for the park, resulting in a park very different from other parks built before.
