  • Essay / Quebec and Canada - 1261

Since the very beginning of the colonization of Canada at the end of the 15th century, there has been dispute and anger between the British and the French. This argument is also present in the ongoing conflict between the French-speaking region of Quebec and the rest of Canada. The conflict was discussed in the Canadian Parliament and it also gave rise to the idea that Quebec should be an independent nation. The first part of the essay will cover the general history of the conflict between Quebec and the rest of Canada. Next, the essay will discuss the positive and negative sides of a possible separation. The last part of the essay will compare the situation in Canada with the separation of Pakistan and East Pakistan in the 1970s. Then conclude whether or not secession is possible for Quebec. Therefore, my research question is: Is there a possibility that the province of Quebec will separate from the rest of Canada? Even before the arrival of the first Europeans in Canada, people had been living there for around 20,000 years1. These early settlers are the predecessors of the indigenous peoples of Canada known as the Inuit. It was not until 1633 that the first Europeans, the French, arrived in Canada and established the first permanent European colony. In 1754, settlements in Canada increased significantly, causing war between French Canada and the British colonies. This war was known as the Seven Years' War, which resulted in predominantly British rule in Canada. However, on July 1, 1867, Canada gained independence from Great Britain and became its own country. Today, Canada is the second largest country in terms of land area and has an abundant amount of natural resources such as fish, hydroelectric power and timber. The ...... middle of paper ...... y independence rule. So to answer the question of whether secession would be legal, the answer is not clear. It is not possible to know until there is a majority vote in favor of secession which would result in the decision of the House of Commons. So is there a possibility that the province of Quebec will separate from the rest of Canada? Looking at the positive sides, Quebec would become politically independent and would only need to learn one language. On the negative side, Quebec would lose Canadian funding, go into debt and possibly be boycotted. However, in light of Pakistan's history, the separation that occurred in Pakistan in 1971 and its outcome, secession could be a wise decision for Quebec. Weighing the pros and cons, it may be fair to say that at present the economic downsides outweigh the independent benefits, but the race remains relatively close and only time will tell.
