  • Essay / Micro-ethnography report: Observation of the swimming pool area

For my ethnography, I wanted to stay where I felt most comfortable to make my observations and that was outside the The apartment where I live by the swimming pool. I decided to do my observations for 3 hours on September 28, 2018 at 6-9 p.m. This research took place at the Apex West Midtown Apartment where I was an observer and took notes of my surroundings and the people around me. To enter the pool area I noticed a black gate guarding the area and you had to pull the lock up to open it. There were many blue and red lounge chairs and sofas lined up in different sizes. Some lounge chairs were covered with a red umbrella with a small table next to them. The pool was quite large and appeared to be shaped like the letter "G" with a bar in the middle. And on both sides behind the gate, apartment buildings overlook it. As I sat down to finally observe the people around me around 6:05 p.m., I noticed that there was a girl who looked to be about 11 years old, wearing a pink swimsuit and a black shirt in the pool, doing some swimming. somersaults and occasionally stopping to float on their backs. I assume her mother is the lady who looks over the balcony of one of the apartments and watches over her while she is in the pool, because the little girl looks up every time she takes a lap in water while smiling. There is a man on one of the pool lounge chairs with a woman who looks like they have a tan. The lady is sipping a martini in one hand and texting in the other. She stops halfway through texting to show something to the man sitting next to her while pointing at the bar, then continues texting. I looked at the bar to see exactly what she was trying to show him, but I couldn't identify it. At 7 years old, the little girl gets out of the pool, looks around, grabs a towel, then begins to dry off. She looked around once more then walked over to the edge of the pool and stood there for a while. She then suddenly covers her nose and dives. At 7:12 p.m., she came out, grabbed her towel, then headed to the stairwell and went upstairs. At 7:40 p.m., the man and woman did the same and by that time the sun had already set and the pool light came on. Around 8:03 p.m., a group of individuals ran towards the swimming pool and jumped in one by one. A man went behind the bar to plug his phone into the speakers, then blasted Drake's "Nice for What." There were two men and two women in the pool throwing a ball. At 8:20 p.m., they were still in the pool, frolicking and having fun. One of the men behind the bar came over and asked me to join them, but I kindly declined his offer. I told him I was too tired and was just relaxing and enjoying the atmosphere. At 8:55 p.m. the music stopped and they all came out, dried off, put on their clothes and headed out the door. After that I noticed how quiet the place was. The breeze was blowing lightly. This was evident by the small waves formed in the pool. Keep in mind: this is just a sample. Get a personalized document now from our expert writers.
