Essay / Civilization and savagery: creating a new society
1. Major Obstacles In Lord of the Flies, the boys who crashed were forced to start a new society because they found themselves on an uninhabited island with no established civilization. However, the boys of Lord of the Flies, when given control of the government, environment, and values, chose not to form an organized, focused civilization, but instead made choices and created arguments that resulted in chaos and savagery. Although there are always obstacles throughout the formation of a new community, some challenges could be overcome to create a society conducive and favored by the people. Some major obstacles that would undoubtedly be encountered when creating a new civilization include disagreements among people regarding community goals, controversies over power and control, and repression of individual voice. In today's society, people have different goals or opinions about what is important. In Lord of the Flies, one of the main themes is tending the fire, which would ultimately mean rescue, as opposed to hunting pigs, which represents the boys' devolution into savagery. On the one hand, Piggy states, “The most important thing on the island is smoke, and there can be no smoke without fire” (Golding 129). In contrast to this is Jack's belief, which states: "We will have food." Hunting. Catch things…” (Golding 30). In a modern society, this controversy illustrates how the conflicting goals of different groups of people can distract from actually solving the problem. Another issue that causes conflict in Lord of the Flies and would therefore cause problems in any new society is argumentation. about who should be in power and direct the actions of the people...... middle of paper ....... 2011.Democracy.
