Growing up, I looked up to guys like Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, and Barry Bonds. They were some of the best players to ever play the game. In recent years, it has been revealed that these players were taking anabolic steroids throughout their careers. I always thought that with hard work and dedication I could be like them, but that wasn't possible because they all cheated to get the advantage. Anabolic steroids were added to the list of Class III substances in the Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 1990. This law made it illegal to possess anabolic steroids in the United States without a prescription. Congress passed this measure in hopes of preventing the use of anabolic steroids in sports. However, the majority of steroid users are actually non-competitive weightlifters and non-athletes using steroids specifically for cosmetic purposes. Americans have become obsessed with their body image and Congress should not stop people from wanting to look their best. Steroids are a synthesized version of any natural human hormone like estrogen or testosterone, which is the most commonly produced and used steroid. This practice began in the 1930s and was marked by the invention of steroids. Steroids were originally created to treat hormonal deficiencies like male hypogonadism (Steroids 101). But steroids weren't just used for these muscle-wasting diseases. Shortly after their creation, steroids were given to the Nazis to increase their aggression and strength (Steroids 101). By the 1960s, steroids were banned by major sporting organizations, and by the 1990s, Congress had passed the Anabolic Steroids Control Act of 1990 (Steroids 101).
