  • Essay / Ambition vs. Reality - 1238

    Growing up, my parents and teachers always told me that hard work pays off. I believed that if I did well in school, I would go to college and be rewarded with opportunities. Unfortunately, my education did not follow this path. Good grades and motivation fell short of expectations for college applications. I now realize that my parents and teachers did not have the resources to back up their claims. Anyon's research found that socioeconomic class has a direct effect on how children are educated and prepared for their futures. I have experienced it first hand. Lack of college savings and poor guidance left me with limited options for higher education. Then and now, there are limitations that hinder children's journey to a good education. I have been a model student throughout my school experience. My report cards were always As and Bs. I was on the path to academic success! In high school, I was encouraged to enroll in all college prep courses and maintain my grades. I also worked part-time during my junior year and full-time during my senior year, while maintaining a 3.85 GPA. When I began exploring college options, I was disappointed time and time again. I applied directly to schools, I applied for scholarships and grants, I even consulted a military recruiter. All attempts to find funding have failed. Not getting involved in social clubs, community programs or sports left gaping holes in areas where applications were expected. Community college and a combination of student loans and credit card debt became my reality. Unfortunately, after only two semesters of classes – neither of which I wanted – I decided not to re-enroll the following year. Community college tuition increased from $8 to $11 per unit (keep...... middle of paper ...... schools should be adequately funded to support health and well-being be of their communities and the nation as a whole. Continued cuts Lack of funding and lack of praise for educators will continue to erode the path between ambition and reality. Works cited by John F.
