Essay / Food Miles and your carbon footprint - 544
Food Miles is the distance traveled by the food from its place of production to that of the consumer, the less the distance traveled by the food is a better choice for environment and consumer health. Buying food locally reduces food miles and growing food can help reduce food miles. Growing food in the garden significantly reduces food miles because food only travels from your garden to your house. The effects of food miles are measured by the amount of pollution they caused during the journey to the consumer. (Food Miles, 2013; Eco Friendly Food, 2010) Each person has their own carbon footprint, everyone burns carbon dioxide which is considered their own carbon footprint. Carbon dioxide is burned using anything that consumes oil, gas, coal and electricity. The human-produced carbon footprint is increasing every year, which leads to global warming, as it occurs, sea levels rise, and the planet's temperature rises. There are 7 billion people on Earth today and its population will increase significantly over the next two years. This means more people will burn carbon dioxide, accelerating global warming. Global warming has a big impact on the environment and future generations because the world will become hotter, making it impossible for us to grow certain crops in this generation. (Paul Lawton, 2012; Time for Change, 2007; Alyssa Morse, 2013) Buying seasonal food is less expensive since the food is grown locally and many farmers grow and sell this type of food. Locally grown foods that are in season generally taste better than imported foods. When food is transported, it must be harvested early and refrigerated to ensure it does not rot. During transport, they may not mature effectively compared to what they would in their natural environment, preventing the food from developing its full flavor. Foods that are shipped and refrigerated lose flavor at every step of the process, but fresh, locally grown and harvested foods will regain their full flavor. Buying locally and in season is better for your health since some foods require preservatives (like wax) and irradiation (zapping foods with a blast of radiation to kill germs). (Green Living, 2012; Michele Morris, 2012) A variety of living things constitutes biodiversity, different plants, animals and microorganisms create this biodiversity. There are three main categories of biodiversity: genetic diversity, species diversity and ecosystem diversity...
