Therapeutic cloning represents a realistic opportunity for patients suffering from many diseases. Murnaghan says: “The process of therapeutic cloning is simple: a scientist extracts the nucleus (which contains genetic material), then extracts the nucleus from a somatic cell (any cell in the body except sperm and eggs). Then the somatic cell nucleus is inserted into the egg [of a donor female]. The egg now contains the patient's DNA. The egg is simulated to divide shortly thereafter and forms a clump of cells called a blastocyst. Cells located in the center of the blastocyst are isolated and used to create stem cells which are infused into the patient where they are ideally integrated into the tissues, giving them the necessary structure and function. » Therapeutic cloning is a relatively safe procedure. One of the reasons therapeutic cloning is safe is that cells can be safely taken from embryos or adults. Cloning does not require a human embryo in some cases; cells can sometimes be collected from a living adult. Therapeutic cloning can be performed with cells that can be safely harvested from adults or adolescents (Marzilli, p. 19). Embryos sometimes need to be destroyed during this process, but the benefits of treating diseases outweigh the harms (Murnaghan). Therapeutic cloning is also safe because the organs produced come from the same DNA as that of the patient; and the risk of rejection by the body is lower (Murnaghan). When a new organ is transplanted into the human body, heavy medications must be taken so that the body does not reject the donated tissues; this medicine does not guarantee that the organ will not be rejected. "...... middle of paper ...... would be the same as for patients and there would be less chance of rejection after a transplant. Therapeutic cloning has the potential to treat “many neurological, cardiovascular and hematological diseases” (Ballaro). By using stem cells to create different tissues, more organs could be used for transplants. If dedicated scientists continue their research, incomprehensible progress could be made in this field and many lives could be saved through this process. In just 56 years, the human species went from building the first airplane to landing on the moon; everything can be achieved through knowledge. If this determination were applied to learning cloning, millions of lives around the world would be saved from horrible diseases. In the future, therapeutic cloning could be a treatment used by many people, and why should any human being be denied a treatment option ??
