Throughout The Scarlet Letter, everyone had some form of secret that they preferred not to share, but sometimes not telling can do more harm what good. At the end of the film, Hawthorne left us with a quote saying, “Be true, be true, be true.” Hawthorne is trying to say that keeping secrets isn't always the best solution because it only hurts someone. Everyone at some point has lied and kept a secret, but it depends on the situation you find yourself in. In the first scene, Hester is pressured to tell the truth about the father's name, but Hester refuses. This is an example of keeping a secret in order to protect someone else; who in this case is Pastor Dimmesdale. Dimmesdale is an honorable and well-known man whom the town admires, but Hester does not want him to ruin her name, even if it means she has to live in ignominy. Many tales of secrets are displayed throughout the film. In The Scarlet Letter, it begins with Hester Prynne and her child, Pearl, being brought to the scaffold to confess the father's name.
