  • Essay / The Crucible by Arthur Miller - 1087

Reading JournalFirst entry, Act One. The first scene of The Crucible can be considered an opening scene, as it introduces some of the characters from the book and the story. We actually see the introduction of the characters and are shown how the whole story began. However, the one that shocks me the most is Abigail Williams. Indeed, at the beginning of the book, we see that she appears as a delicate and gentle girl, a girl who could do nothing wrong. However, we see throughout the story in this first act that she is not who she claimed to be. We indeed discover that she was Proctor's mistress and that she destroyed one of the holiest things in the world: marriage. This scene with Proctor seems like foreshadowing to me because we really start to see who Abigail Williams really is. Who will she become? It's up to us to find out. Second entry, Act One. This entry will talk about Abigail Williams but also the theme of fear. First, let's talk about Abigail Williams. In this scene, the revelation of Abigail's true personality really hits us. The fact that she is willing to drink blood and harm forest spirits, all to kill a woman she considers her rival, really shows us who Abigail really is: a vain girl willing to waste life. from everyone to get what she wants. We also see in this scene the theme of fear and how it affects the characters in the book. In fact, in this first act, we see how Abigail tries to install fear in the young girl's mind. Indeed, when they are discovered and they try to tell the truth, Abigail shouts words to them that are supposed to make them fear. Right in the scene, she says, "Let one of you speak a word, or the edge of a word over the other...... middle of paper ...... children? ยป Hathorne asks these kinds of questions. questions because he knows people can't answer them without accusing themselves. By asking the previous questions, he is implying that what he is saying is the truth. Therefore, him asking loaded questions gives him the opportunity to say that what he is saying is the truth.First entry, act four. In this entry I would like to talk about the fact that John Proctor is somehow forced to confess to witchcraft. This brings us to talking about the court's insane rule: if you confess to witchcraft, you go to prison, and if you don't confess, you are killed. So when Proctor learns that his wife is pregnant, he is somehow forced to confess in order to stay alive and witness the birth of his child. However, after confessing, he is forced by the jury to sign it, but he refuses and is therefore killed..
