Essay / Macbeth and Poetry - 2844
Examine how Shakespeare presents the love between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth as their relationship develops. The play “Macbeth” is a story made up of many themes and messages, some clearer than others. I think love is one of the most hidden themes, in that you have to understand and interpret the thoughts and feelings of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. At the beginning of the play, you discover Macbeth who comes across 3 witches who predict his future. . This is another important aspect of the play but has little to do with love. When Macbeth discovers this news from the witches, he writes to Lady Macbeth to tell her the news. This shows that Macbeth is excited and feels the need to tell his beloved. “My dearest partner in greatness, so that you do not lose the right to rejoice, ignoring what greatness is promised to you” Is contained in the letter that Macbeth writes to Lady Macbeth. “My dear” shows his attachment to Lady Macbeth. The quote “partner of greatness” is unusual for a man to call his wife in this era. Women were normally mistreated and used as status rather than individuals who can be loved and who can love during the time when Macbeth was set. Calling her a “partner of greatness” shows that he views them both as equals and united as one. Later in the play, Lady Macbeth seems to direct the relationship, but not in an obvious way. She manipulates Macbeth in such a way that he will accomplish what she wants him to do. Using this, Lady Macbeth plans a murder and imposes it on Macbeth. I wouldn't say it was abusing their love, but Lady Macbeth was manipulating Macbeth's obedience. When Macbeth and Lady Macbeth discuss this plan together, Lady Macbeth says, "Leave everything else... middle of paper... base your hypothesis on this." The themes of love in these poems and plays differ but also have a strong connection. There is a true love and devotion that underlines all of this. Each individual expresses it in different ways. But the way these themes are presented in Macbeth is through the use of soliloquies and monologues. It forces you to infer and think about their love, it's not clearly stated unlike the poems. The most reliable source for judging love is “A Woman to Her Lover” or “Macbeth”. It depends on your ability to infer emotions and actions. “Macbeth” is more reliable in getting a sense of underlying love and true love. But it is difficult to see and notice these emotions, you also get a view of love from both angles. "A Woman for Her Lover" is more reliable for obtaining an idealistic and true view of love, because it is more stated, but only represented from a single point of view..
