Essay / Historical Background of Animal Farm By George Orwell
Animal FarmHistorical BackgroundAnimal Farm is a fairy tale that uses the animals of an English farm to tell the story of Soviet communism. When the workers and peasants of the Russian nation, assisted by a class known as the intelligentsia, rebelled against the rich and powerful class of capitalists and aristocrats, and communism was born. Their main goal was to establish a socialist utopia based on the principles of German economic and political philosopher Karl Marx. Marx also wrote a book called Das Kapital in which he argued that society would naturally evolve from a monarchy and aristocracy to capitalism and then communism. He also mentioned that the working poor oppressed by capitalism would be restored and all people would live equally. Since Russia wanted to establish a socialist utopia based on the thoughts of Karl Marx and the German economy, Russia became a communist country. George Orwell wrote this novel not only to tell us about politics in Russia, but also about the events that happened during that time. example: 1. The farm owner is evicted from his land because he did not treat the animals well. It is an allusion to the Russian Revolution of 1917 which led to the dismissal of Tsar Nicholas II.2. Old Major was the first leader of the farm animals but upon his death two other pigs, Napoleon and Snowball, took his place as leader. This was based on a real event that happened when Lenin died, Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky fought for control of the Soviet Union.3. When Mr. Jones attempted to retake the farm, "the battle of the stable" is analogous to the Russian Civil War.4. When Napoleon chased Snowball away with his secret weapons, it was like Stalin's elimination of Leon Trotsky in 19...... middle of paper ......te and brainwash his citizens is also another message that can be found. In this story, there is a pig, Squealer, who spread Napoleon's propaganda among the other animals in order to make Napoleon more beautiful in the eyes of the animals. With Napoleon, they also changed history and commandments to accommodate their growing power. As Squealer was a good speaker, he was able to manipulate and brainwash the other animals for example, Snowball who was the hero of the stable battle became a traitor because of the change in history and the propaganda. The other messages of the book are corruption of revolution by its leaders, be aware of history, people should not just sit back and accept whatever the government does, they should stand up for their rights and needs and people should question the government's decision and be aware of what it is doing.
