What must be factual for something to be factual, what must exist for something to exist? For Spinoza, before one can fully understand ethics, one must be familiar with metaphysics. Metaphysics is concerned with the fundamental principles that characterize everything; metaphysics is the foundation from which everything comes. This is the reason why he initiates ethics with God and nature as a whole before starting to converse about the human spirit. Spinoza was anti-religious in his position; he did not speak of a God from a theological or religious aspect but from a metaphysical aspect on the nature of reality. Spinoza agrees with the religious view that there actually exists an intimate relationship between man and God, but not with the Christian view of the relationship. His ideas about this relationship are very different from those of Christians. Spinoza believed that nature was one and that God was one. This is to say that the mind and body are equally truthful and that human nature is actually one in itself. This consideration demonstrates that man is united with God in Spinoza's observation. Spinoza uses the geometric method to help those who understand God and human nature.
