Essay / Gender inequality, functionalism and symbolism...
Gender inequality refers to the inequality between men and women, or the unequal treatment or perception of a person based on their sex . Gender inequality is almost always more pronounced towards women than towards men. Women are considered inferior to men in every country in the world. This form of society is called patriarchal and is one of the most significant problems in American society today. Patriarchy means that the country has a predominantly male-dominated society. Does anyone realize the consequences of gender inequality on our country as a whole? Not everyone may think it has a big impact on our society, but gender inequality is at the root of many of our problems today, including discrimination in terms of wealth, income and status. I chose to write about this topic because I believe it is one of the biggest issues facing all societies, not just the United States. Addressing issues of gender inequality in our country could have a bigger impact than many people realize. Changing something that most consider so tiny could play a very important role in a much larger project in our country. If we could narrow the gap created by inequality between men and women, perhaps we could help influence the way America thinks about many other issues as well. The term functionalism is used to explain social events in terms of the functions they perform. The functionalist approach is also used to show how something affects the sustainability of society. A functionalist approach to gender inequality shows us that gender-dominant careers help society continue to function, but we can already see the long-term effects of how gender inequality has created problems in today's society. Even after all this huge... middle of paper ...the general problem is a terrible problem not only in American society, but in all societies around the world. America represents only a small part of the current trend in gender inequality. The United States is indeed one of the countries that has tried to take steps in the right direction on this issue. We have made many advances in work, education, and even politics. Many laws have been put in place to protect women, but everything is not perfect yet. While I don't think the issue of gender equality will ever disappear from our country, or any other country, we still have a lot of progress to make. I think maybe if people looked at things from a more sociological perspective, maybe they would understand that even some of the little things they did and said could have a huge impact on future generations of the society in which they live..
