Margaret Thatcher as Margaret Hilda Roberts was born on October 13, 1925 in Grantham, England, to Alfred Roberts, a grocer, preacher and local mayor, and by Beatrice Ethel. She and her younger sister, Muriel, spent most of their childhood in Grantham, helping their father in the grocery store. Margaret's father was active in local politics and raised Margaret and Muriel as strict Methodists. He became mayor of Grantham in 1945, but lost his position as alderman in 1952, when the Labor Party came to power. Margaret won a scholarship to Kesteven and Grantham Girls' School, where she was headmistress for the 1942-43 school year. His report cards showed academic consistency and brilliance in many extracurricular activities. In 1946, Margaret attended Oxford College and became president of the Oxford University Conservative Association, where she was inspired by the political work of Freidrich von Hayek; an influence that was evident in all his reforms and policies. Margaret graduated with first class honors and received her BSc in Chemistry in 1947 and moved to Essex to work as a chemist for BX Plastics. In 1950, Margaret first stood for Parliament and became the Conservative candidate for the Labor Party seat of Dartford. .
