  • Essay / The advantages and disadvantages of gene therapy - 1248

In our modern world, medical techniques and practices are constantly advancing. Today, scientists are discovering exciting and fascinating new ways to treat diseases. In the mid-1970s, researchers found a way to isolate specific genes from the DNA of chromosomes. In the 1980s, this practice became known as gene therapy. Essentially, it involves the use of DNA as a medicine to treat diseases. Gene therapy is a complex method in which faulty genes are removed and then replaced with correct genes in order to treat a disease. Each of us is born with a unique set of chromosomes containing genes. These genes code for our physical traits, personality traits, and even our long-term health. Sometimes certain genes have an error or mutation in the structure or sequence of the DNA, which can lead to disease. Diseases linked to genetic inheritance include sickle cell disease and diabetes. Currently, in the United States, gene therapy is only offered in a clinical trial. Clinical trials are closely monitored by the Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health to ensure the safety of the people participating in the studies. Clinical trials of gene therapy in humans have found some success in treating problems such as severe combined immunodeficiency, hemophilia, blindness caused by retinitis pigmentosa, and leukemia. In some cases, your immune system does not attack diseased cells because it does not identify them. them as intruders. Doctors could use gene therapy to train your immune system to recognize cells that pose a threat. With gene therapy, we can eliminate these irritating diseases before they even show their first symptoms. In this process, the DNA that codes for a healing ...... middle of paper ...... center of diseases ranging from enzyme deficiencies to cancer or AIDS. I believe we shouldn't suffer if we don't have to. If somatic cell gene therapy were medically available to someone who is suffering, it should be used to help them. I believe the science of gene therapy will continue to advance over the years to come. As a responsible citizen, I must take note of this and be involved in decision-making processes, otherwise gene therapy could lead to negative things. Recombinant DNA techniques must be regulated. I do not want the practice of medicine or the human race to be negatively affected by misuse. I also believe that the moral infractions we commit are not caused by the things we learn, but by what we choose. Researchers have almost given us a life free of diseases like cystic fibrosis, cancer and AIDS, and that shouldn't be taken for granted..
