The book begins with Daniel's description of his grandfather, Bepy, the charming and insincere chef of Sonnino. Bepy and his wife, Ada, survived World War II and emerged "literally infected with postwar joy," replacing "the terror of Mussolini and Adolf Hitler with a mimetic reverence for Clark Gable." and Elizabeth Taylor. Even though Bepy and Ada survived, discussions about the many relatives claimed by the Holocaust remain taboo. Bepy was a perfect dresser, a habitual womanizer and, like all Sonninos, "allergic to the inner life." Bepy was a stubborn, larger-than-life character who overshadows his two sons, the albino Luca (Daniel's father) idolizes Nanni and revitalizes the family business and Teo. Bepy persuades his son, Luca, to view albinism as a unique personality test. a positive light. They made it part of his strength and accepted him. He gave Luca a good education and prepared him for the world and to succeed in it. Bepy wanted to strengthen his future generation. Luca and his father got along well. Luca, aged twenty-three, considers Bepy his hero and admires his qualities. Until a financial catastrophe occurs in the Sonnino family and she ruins the entire family due to her lack of consideration for others. Luca hated the fact that his father was constantly after women, what did he do for his sons and why he kept wasting money when their family had none. Bepy goes bankrupt when he cheats on his Catholic partner of thirty years, Nanni.
