There are many traditions and norms in religious culture. In Islam in particular, there are traditions and actions that are normal in Islamic societies, but which may seem unorthodox to Western countries. These are cultural differences that societies eventually become accustomed to and accept, but there are certain practices that are morally wrong in all their forms and go against basic human rights. This problem and practice constitutes honor killing, in which the women of a family are murdered for disgracing the home. Honor killing is a practice found in many countries in the Middle East. It is the process of killing daughters, wives, sisters and mothers that has disgraced their families. According to Amnesty International, there are deeply ingrained beliefs that girls and women are considered commodities for men and do not share the same rights as men. Girls and women are believed to embody family honor and are responsible for upholding it. Women can disgrace various things, such as talking to unrelated men, committing adultery, seeking divorce, refusing to marry and the worst of them, being a victim of rape, which is beyond their control . Women can also be killed for no reason, as men are allowed to commit honor killings even when there is even the slightest suspicion of transgression. Honor killings have evolved over the centuries, where there is no fixed transgression that would allow this practice, and under the authority and judgment of men within the family, they can commit an honor killing . Usually, disobeying can result in honor killing, but this is a very broad term that can encompass many things, depending on a man's judgment. Female circumcision is a debated topic in Islam, where more liberals reject the practice and traditionalists who believe that no aspect of Islam can be changed accept the practice. Female circumcision involves removing the clitoris with a knife. The World Health Organization classifies it into 4 different types, from removing or modifying certain aspects of the clitoris to completely removing the clitoris and introducing substances into the vagina that will cause tightening and shrinkage (Skaine 8). Unlike male circumcision which is justified by cultural rituals, traditions and health benefits. It can serve as personal hygiene and preventative health care to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted diseases.
