  • Essay / The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - 2061

It is common to assume that food insecurity negatively affects people who are food insecure, but how should a food secure person respond when insecure Does someone else's food negatively affect their personal experiences? Phion is a blogger whose concerns reflect American sentiment regarding the rights of food stamp users. Phion recounts a recent trip he and his wife took to Sam's Club where they found themselves stuck in line behind a woman with "two shopping carts filled with racks of ribs, tenderloins, pork chops, soda, 'a ton of junk food, rib eye steaks, and tons of other stuff totaling over $800. And she paid with her EBT card [a type of debit card for food stamp recipients]. This encounter left Phion in a state of anger and disbelief. He couldn't understand how he and his wife were struggling to save money to plan for the expansion of their lives (i.e. homeownership, children, etc.), so that this woman was shopping to feed a king and his court with taxpayers' money. In deep frustration and envy, Phion imagines a reality in which he could afford to buy food at the lowest price with "other people's redistributed money." Phion expands his thinking by asking why others “should not be responsible for their own lives,” while he and his wife should be responsible and autonomous for theirs. Phion is concerned that current welfare systems fail to give participants any incentive not to take advantage of the resources on offer. Exclaiming that people living on tight budgets or in poverty should be influenced by programs to "stop having children they can't pay for, be grateful for what they are given, or encouraged to go out of the system to meet their own needs. Phion then gets defensive and clarifies that he is not talking about the "... middle of paper ....... United States Department of Agriculture." Internet. September 13, 2012.
