  • Essay / Uniformity, the end of the human race - 1084

In the modern world, most people take everything for granted: love, beautiful landscapes and infinite knowledge of everything. They complain about minor details of life. Men worry about their cars and women worry about getting their dresses dirty. Now imagine a community in which there are no cars or colorful dresses. Not realizing that there is a possibility of identity, they do not appreciate diversity. Imagine a community with sameness and no diversity. Imagine how restricted citizens could be, how colorless and loveless their lives could be. This is what Jonas' community looks like in Lois Lowry's The Giver. In his community, everyone is stuck in the same life and doesn't know that it can change. In this world with Unity, all the things that sustain life, such as love, landscapes and infinite knowledge, have disappeared and a useless world with Unity remains; however, this can be changed if love, color and knowledge are brought into the world. For many people, their family is the most precious and important thing in their life. Now try to imagine this in a community in which love does not exist. . The fact is that if love doesn't exist, neither does feeling. Jonas has begun his training and now regularly receives souvenirs from the Giver. The Giver decides to give Jonas a souvenir like no other; a memory of a time when love and true family were in the air. After the memory of Christmas and love, he returns home and asks his parents if they love him. “'Jonas. You, of all people. Precision of language, please'” (127)! Believe it or not, this is Jonas' father's response and he emphasizes "Jonas" and "please." If a child walks up to their parents and asks them if they... in the middle of a piece of paper... they actually do. If one really sits down and thinks about what is being hidden from the public, one will realize that it is actually a lot of information that is being hidden from the public, all because of Unity. If love, color and knowledge were to exist in the community, one would realize how much better life is, how worth living and how much they hate identity. The community of Jonas is a perfect example of what would happen if Samity existed in our community. It is then that we would realize how much they would prefer to return to their former diverse, beautiful and loving community. This is why it is impudent for people to respect and appreciate our modern world in which knowledge is infinite. The world should end all wars and settle for peace among all, lest uniformity is always a possibility..
