  • Essay / The Hammer Movie - 785

Before watching the movie “The Hammer,” I didn’t know what to expect. I had never seen a deaf film before and I wasn't sure I could fully understand the film. Watching the movie wasn't as difficult as I hoped and I enjoyed it. The best part is that it’s based on the true story of Matthew “The Hammer” Hamill. The film begins by introducing a little boy named Matt. We discover that Matt is completely deaf. His grandfather does not take the news lightly and slightly denies the fact that his grandson is deaf. The baby's mother talks about schools for the deaf and teaching the boy sign language. The grandfather does not believe in these kinds of institutions and believes that his grandson would learn to communicate through oral teaching; teach him to read lips. The film moves quickly through the little boy's life in elementary school. He is placed in a special education class, even though he is clearly doing well; his only problem is that he is deaf. After watching this scene from the movie, it got me thinking. Not only was this little boy chosen for being a little different from the others, but he was also considered dumber than the others because of it. Even though this happened years ago, it reminds me of today's society. Often people today treat those who don't blend in differently. People also believe that they are much better than those who suffer from some form of disability, when in reality, this is not true. Throughout his childhood, he was often bullied by other children because he was deaf. His grandfather begins to teach him to speak by having him feel his vocal cords while he speaks. He also encourages her to join the wrestling team. It was difficult for him to adjust to the team because he would... middle of paper... couple, but it helped him hone his signing skills. Eventually, Matt breaks records at his school while wrestling there. . He won two national championships for his school and ultimately took his career to the next level. He eventually became a professional wrestler and then an ultimate fighter. He is well known in the deaf and wrestling community. Watching this film helped me a lot to understand a different way of life. This helped me better understand the deaf community and improve my own signature. The advice his girlfriend gave him in the film, I took it into account and it worked for me. Watching this film made me realize the potential that human beings possess, regardless of circumstances, and to never give up on your dreams. With hard work and dedication anything is possible and “The Hammer” is a great example of that..
