Dickens seems to develop such compelling characters that the reader needs to know what happens next... When we first meet Magwich, he seems to be a bad guy. and a manipulative convict, bullying a naive little boy called Pip for the basic food he lacks, shortly after Pip meets him again, but your opinion of Magwich completely changes, he defends Pip from theft actions in which he intimidated him. Afterwards, he is not thought of for a while in the book until he reappears after Pips' transformation from a lower-class young boy to a gentleman. The fact that he is the reason for Pips' transformation shows him as the hero, but he is still wanted for crime. Magwich from the first time we meet him is described in detail by the shy Pip who is not described in great detail at all, almost as if his identity is left up to the reader to decide. Magwich is described as... “a fearful man, all in gray, with a large iron on his leg. A man without a hat, with broken shoes and an old rag tied around his head.” His not wearing a hat in the Victorian era was considered rude, but he wears a rag proving he is dignified and polite, but "old rag" suggests he is poor and lower class . The setting when Magwich first appears is at the "graveyard", there seems to be an air of death, a raw and dark setting. The setting seems too in-depth as if it were important to the story; the setting seems to reflect Magwich dark and raw, lonely and isolated. This seems to represent his life and neglect. While the same setting for Pip is a peaceful place to remember his late mother and father, it now seems that he is left with this older sister who treats him and her blacksmith husband, Joe, terribly. This, when we first meet Miss Havisham in chapter 8, she is also described with a long description. His appearance is described as skeletal and decaying. She is trapped in a time warp of her own making, living in a neglected house in the exact same room at the exact same time her capable future husband left her, the misfortune of his neglect leaving her bitter and seemingly slightly twisted for For example, she wants Pip and Estella to "play”.
