Essay / Dr. Ken Berger The controversy behind life support?
But the decision does not necessarily depend on the doctors' willingness to do so, it is the law that doctors must follow if it were Keller's not to put elderly patients on life support. Health care providers fear legal consequences if they don't do everything in their power to prolong life. Bill Keller says, “I have been criticized by the Catholic Church in the name of life” (Moran np). For centuries, the Catholic Church has been on the side of those opposed to prolonging the dying process. In 1957, Pope Pius XII wrote: "It is not natural to prevent death in cases where there is no hope of recovery when nature calls for death, there is no doubt that the we can remove the life support system. Even that being said, Moran can't necessarily do anything because it's his job and he has to do what he's told or else legal action will be taken. Although Moran is against prolonging life, even when he faced the loss of his father at a young age as a child, he still knew that prolonging life was a necessity.
