The Group of Four and the reform of the UN Security CouncilThe main objective of the Security Council is to maintain peace and global security. The Security Council is one of the six original principal organs of the United Nations. According to the Charter of the United Nations, the functions and powers of the Security Council are a principal organ responsible for many things, including nine of 1: “to maintain international peace and security in accordance with the principles and purposes of the United Nations”. 2 “Investigate any dispute or situation likely to lead to international friction.” 3 “Recommend methods of resolving these disputes or terms of settlement”. “Formulate plans for the establishment of an arms regulatory system”. 5“Determine the existence of a threat to the peace or an act of aggression and recommend the measures to be taken”. 6 “Call on Members to apply economic sanctions and other measures not involving the use of force to prevent or end aggression.” 7“Carry out military action against an aggressor and recommend the admission of new members. 8 “Exercise the trusteeship functions of the United Nations in strategic areas”. 9“Recommend to the General Assembly the appointment of the Secretary-General and, with the Assembly, elect the judges of the International Court of Justice” and many others. The United Nations Security Council has fifteen members. Five permanent members from the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Russia and China have veto power. And the other ten are non-permanent members elected by the General Assembly in particular regions. Traditionally, non-permanent seats are distributed as follows: two for Latin America and the Caribbean, two for Western Europe, two for Asia, three for Africa...... middle of paper.. ....llection” and they are basically regional rivals, there are countries like Mexico and Argentina who don't want Brazil to become a permanent member, and Pakistan who doesn't want India become a permanent member of the Security Council, etc. And finally, there is the African bloc, which is asking for two permanent members of the Security Council. Ultimately, those who follow the United Nations closely do not believe that these two groups would attempt to oppose a resolution that would actually allow for a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. That leaves essentially the United States. The big question here is whether the United States will seize this opportunity and exercise leadership in advancing this step of enlargement in its interest that would empower some of the major established and emerging countries that are not. there, only time will tell.
