Essay / Jonathan Swift's Modest Proposal - 1494
In one of Jonathan Swift's best-known works, A Modest Proposal, he proposes change in Ireland. By using symbols and outrageous language, Swift shows what he is trying to get across to people since no one will listen to the basic facts about Ireland's poverty; it adds children's nutrition. The proposal begins by discussing the extreme poverty that has gripped Ireland and explains that no one will make any changes and that England is no help. Swift's tone could be described as cold and rational as he tries to get his point across. It briefly describes a "cycle" of poverty in which parents are too poor, meaning their children will be too poor, leading to suggestions of eating poor children. Jonathan supports his proposal, saying that the economy will benefit and Irish children will be able to help feed the country. Swift says children could be sold for money once they are ready to eat and the money could be used to feed the family and pay their rent, thereby reducing poverty and reducing abortion, meaning no one would no longer have to depend on England. To convey this, satire aims to highlight the flaws in the way Ireland and England handled economic and social problems. Jonathan points out that the Irish are also crazy for wanting to sell their children for money. The whole thing is simply full of political, moral and economic questions that no one has the answers to. To fully understand A Modest Proposal, a lot of research and rereading is necessary because satire is generally difficult to understand. In short, Swift highlights Ireland's faults and his disgust with England because of the conditions in Ireland. Conditions in Ireland were very bad... middle of paper ......es. In both plays he tries to enlighten people about what is really going on and that the English are just schemers trying to ruin Ireland because of their beliefs. The only way to really get its message across is satire crazy enough to grab people's attention and highlight that social and political problems are out of control and changes need to be made before it's too late.
