  • Essay / Duality in Fahrenheit 451 - 456

Duality in Fahrenheit 451 Dualities are the most basic of comparisons and are the easiest for the mind to understand in that total opposites are highlighted. These opposites unconsciously provide a deeper insight into the material and consciously entertain. In Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, many dualisms are included in both Montag and the outside world, providing 180 degree inverted views, giving the book more depth and inner meaning. Within Montag's many layers are many opposing sides. For example, Montag is a fireman who burns books for a living, but at home he spends time reading novels, poetry, and other written materials. Although Montag could be called a hypocrite, he dislikes both reading and burning; he goes through a change that leads him to love books. Humans have the power to change and go from one extreme to another, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. Additionally, when Mildred is with Montag, Montag has no feelings for her but thinks of her as she is killed by the bombs. He possesses both the knowledge that Mildred doesn't love him and a heart that truly cares, but he doesn't know how to deal with it. His feelings are oppressed; it takes a major event (the bomb) to wake them from their hibernation. There are many dualisms in the outside world of Fahrenheit 451. For example, Montag receives contrasting lectures from Faber and Beatty on what to do with books and how to be. Beatty and Faber are like black and white: complete opposites, no matter how you look at it. This “other side of the coin” clearly compares the book engraver to the book reader, hatred to love, and it also gives the reader the opportunity to “choose” sides. Additionally, fire is used to burn houses and books, to destroy property; it is also used by excluded men to prepare their meals, keep warm and provide them with light. Fire itself has two opposing sides: destruction and preservation. The fire gives Montag as well as the reader the understanding that a thing can have both good and bad qualities, and that many powers can be spoiled if used for negative purposes..
