  • Essay / Qualities and characteristics of an effective manager

What qualities, characteristics or aspects of a person qualify them to be an effective manager? Although there are endless choices to answer this question, Huband defines a top manager as one who "creates a work environment conducive to achieving the organization's objectives." These objectives may be corporate objectives or accounting department objectives, but in both cases the same principles are used to achieve them” (Huband, 1992). The characteristics that make up this work environment vary from communication to motivation to trust in their employees. Effective managers also treat each of their employees and colleagues equally and with the respect they deserve. Communication Among the characteristics of an effective manager, communication is one of the most important keys to success in every organization. Communication is what makes the organization functional because it is part of everything that is done in the workplace. “An effective manager is also an effective communicator. Communication involves conveying meaning or understanding from one person to another. Communication is successful when the same information transmitted is received loud and clear” (Huband, 1992). This statement by Huband was found to be similar to a combination of responses after conducting an informal survey of friends and professors. Each of the investigators agreed that communication was at the forefront of their success when leading a project. One specific response matches that of Ellis when she mentions, “The foundation of all relationships is communication. Without communicating effectively, we are unable to achieve our goals and objectives” (Ellis, 2005). According to Ellis, the communication process involves... middle of paper ......providing information when necessary. Good communication is the key to a good relationship. When we communicate better with our friends, family and colleagues, we are able to better understand what they want and need. Vice versa, our friends, family and colleagues are able to better understand what we want and need. “By continually communicating and emphasizing the need for effective communication, managers can improve their communication skills and ultimately do a better job for the organization” (Phillips, 1998). This article recommends that more research into effective communication be done as it occurs. is endless information on what effective communication entails. Additional research should be conducted to (a) provide managers with key information on being an effective communicator, and (b) give effective managers a more comprehensive approach to communication..
