I decided to use Herman Lee for my artist comparison. The first work I saw of his was a series on the great Romans and they were portraits. There are five pieces in this series that contain five different Roman characters. These are portraits of a person in a vector/illustrative style. I decided to use it as a starting point for my piece. Instead of making my portrait of a significant figure in our current society, I chose to do it myself. Painting a portrait of myself is more difficult to manage than painting a portrait of another person. Doing a self-portrait is difficult for me because it involves determining what side of you, as a person, you want to be seen as or what you want to be seen as. You have to show part of who you are as a person and be quite vulnerable to the audience, so I decided to step out of my comfort zone for this piece. Herman Lee's Great Romanians series intrigued me because all of the portraits have a scattered use of vibrant colors, which is similar to my work. Bright colors give a sense of play and chance. The way he placed the colors makes it look like he had fun creating them, while also making it look like paint was applied to the piece randomly, even though it's all done electronically. The work is “filled with colors of all kinds that are meant to turn heads (Osnat Tzadok: 2002-2010)”. The portraits he made for this series are up close and include only the head, as well as the neck. Some other portraits he made also included the upper part of their clothing. Herman Lee does all of his work on the computer and most of it is in vector/illustrator format. As I stepped out of my comfort zone for this piece, I wanted to display my...... middle of paper..... .h what the world is looking for. The only difficulty in using someone so new to this industry is that they aren't talked about much, if at all. It is a shame that on his site he does not give any reason or intention regarding his pieces. He just has the titles of his pieces and a lot of it assumes what he means by what he's trying to imply. "In trying to decipher the painting in this way, I was doing what I assume most people do when they look at art, looking for a narrative or at least enough clues that I can begin to piece together a story from what I saw . In all art, from the figurative to the abstract, we tend to look for correspondences with what we know before even learning the title (Michael Milburn: 2009)”, which means; that I was trying to “find something recognizable in (Michael Milburn: 2009)” the Great Romanians.
