Neonatal nursing was established so that nurses could devote their time and skills to newborns. Neonatal nurses care for newborns who are sick for several months, sometimes years, because many infants suffer from long-term illnesses. These infants can have several problems, including prematurity, birth defects, infections, heart defects, and surgical problems. Many neonatal nurses work in a hospital setting within the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit. There are three different nursery levels in which neonatal nurses work.
