Neonatal nursing was established so that nurses could devote their time and skills to newborns. Neonatal nurses care for newborns who are sick for several months, sometimes years, because many infants suffer from long-term illnesses. These infants can have several problems, including prematurity, birth defects, infections, heart defects, and surgical problems. Many neonatal nurses work in a hospital setting within the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit. There are three different nursery levels in which neonatal nurses work. The first level is known as the Newborn Care Unit. In this unit they work with healthy newborns. Level two is known as the Intermediate Nursery Care Unit. In this unit, they work with less seriously ill infants. Most premature babies are housed there. Premature infants may need supplemental oxygen, intravenous treatment and specialized nutrition. Level three is known as the neonatal intensive care unit. This is where they will work with the most seriously ill infants.
